Our School was founded in 1941 to serve the Afrikaans-speaking community of Durban. From its beginnings, the school was dedicated to providing quality education while preserving the language and cultural values of its students. Located in Umbilo, Durban, the school initially catered to local families, quickly establishing itself as a pillar within the community.
Since its inception, Port Natal School has remained dedicated to celebrating Afrikaans language and cultural identity. This focus has shaped the school’s programs and community activities, allowing students to stay connected to their heritage while receiving a strong academic foundation. The school’s commitment to culture has fostered a unique environment where heritage and education meet.
We have grown to include Grades RR through 12, offering a wide range of academic, leadership, sports and cultural activities to ensure that holistic education takes place. The school expanded its language offerings in 2017 to include English as a secondlanguage of instruction, ensuring that both Afrikaans- and English-speaking students feel welcomed and supported. This bilingual approach has allowed the school to reach a broader community while remaining true to its core values.
Whilst deeply rooted in shared values and traditions, we are also committed to a forward-thinking approach to education. Through a blend of academic excellence, cultural pride, and inclusivity, the school prepares students to be active and responsible citizens. With offerings that span from academic, technology, sports and culture to community service, Port Natal continues to shape the future leaders of South Africa by honoring its past and embracing new possibilities to prepare our learners to become responsible and balanced citizens of the 21st century and the 4IR.
